“A String of Specters:” new essay out now!

An essay I wrote, “A String of Specters: Reflections on the Haunting in Viet Thanh Nguyen’s The Refugees,” was just published in Asian Studies: Journal of Critical Perspectives on Asia, for an issue on “Southeast Asia: Comparisons and Cross-Border Linkages.” You can view the journal issue here.

I wrote it as part book review, part self-reflection as a migrant scholar studying migration itself. It was originally for an essay writing contest that the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Department of American Studies was holding in conjunction with Viet Thanh Nguyen’s visit as the Fall 2019 Dan and Maggie Inouye Distinguished Chair in Democratic Ideals. I was fortunate enough to receive the first price in the graduate student category, and had the chance to meet Nguyen as well, if only briefly.
