I’m very excited to screen my film, Kung Saan Man Tayo, at the University of the Philippines Film Center this November 29, 2023 at 4pm. This is going to be a sort of homecoming for me and this film; many years ago, I conceptualized of this film as a way for myself to reflect on and process my life as a former “Iskolar ng Bayan” who has turned away from my supposed “duties” to the country and migrated to the US. I actually did not finish my BA in Film and Audiovisual Communication degree at UP, because I was petitioned by my mom in 2007. I have since finished my BA at the University of Washington, but that did not take away from the fact that I was a government scholar for nine years.
I was supposed to give back to my country; instead I left it and eventually became an American. For this reason, I had a lot of guilt early on my US journey. While I was still working at a call center in downtown Seattle, I conceptualized this film because I was curious about my other friends and batchmates who were also “iskolar ng bayan” who left the country. However, it was only during the pandemic that I was finally able to finish editing this film. I am now excited to bring it home to UP:
